MIGA issued a $4.7 million guarantee for the construction and operation of the first modern bulk handling and storage facility for imported grains and fertilizers in the port of Mombasa. The MIGA guarantee covers the investment of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Company of the United Kingdom against the risks of transfer restriction, expropriation, and war and civil disturbance.

The project consists of the construction of new storage facilities using mechanical unloaders and overhead conveyors, which will increase unloading capacity to five times its current rate. It will also help tolosses from spillage and pilferage. Local Kenyan contractors will supply goods, such as concrete and steel, and services for the construction of the facilities. In addition, the project will create several jobs for Kenyan nationals, and employees will be trained in mechanical handling equipment, fire emergency, and other health and safety procedures.
